ESU-Columbus is thrilled to have jazz legend, Vaugh Wiester, as our guest speaker. Vaughn Wiester's "Famous Jazz Orchestra" is made up of 22 very talented professional musicians that have come together every Monday evening on a semi-informal basis for the last twenty (20) years to share their love of  their music by "reading" the best Big Band Charts from the last 50 years.

Born in Abilene, Texas and raised in Mount Vernon, Ohio, Wiester began playing with local jazz bands in his teens. After studying music at Ohio State University, Wiester worked as a freelance trombonist for several years, notably with Woody Herman in the mid-1970s.

Wiester has taught jazz studies at Capital University in Columbus (leaving that position in the early '90s), and has worked with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, the Kenley Players, the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, the Rick Brunetto Big Band, Ernie Krivda's Fat Tuesday Big Band, and many others including his own big band, the Famous Jazz Orchestra. Vaughn was one of the original members of The Keith Henson Octet and his playing and arrangements were featured on Henson's two CD's, "Our Delight," and "Perkin' with the Keith Henson Octet." A friend of Bill Holman, Wiester is also a very talented arranger. Wiester's arrangement of Charles Mingus' composition, "Duke Ellington Sound of Love" was recorded on the Woody Herman LP, "Road Father."
