ESU Celebrates Shakespeare 400
National Announcement – Fall 2015
What is ESU Shakespeare 400?
On April 23, 1616, William Shakespeare died in Stratford-upon-Avon in England, and his extraordinary legacy began. Around the globe next year, theaters, universities, museums and schools will celebrate his plays and sonnets and their impact from Renaissance England to the entire world today.
The English-Speaking Union will be taking part in this year-long celebration of the Bard's legacy. We will be honoring him through in-school and community-based student Shakespeare competitions, workshops and classes for educators in the US and the UK, and lectures and special events at our Branches across the country. This is a wonderful opportunity to both showcase our national and international partnerships (with such organizations as the Folger Shakespeare Library and Shakespeare's Globe) and to celebrate the great work that our Branches are already doing in their local communities.
- National Shakespeare Competition
Students compete in school competitions in the fall and winter, seeking a spot at the National Competition in New York City in Spring 2016. - Teaching Shakespeare Workshops
One-day workshops sponsored by ESU Branches across the country teach teachers, in a dynamic up-on-your-feet way, about Shakespeare's language, the First Folio, and how to engage all students in the Bard's texts. - British Universities Summer School
Study this summer at Shakespeare's Globe in London or at Oxford (and, of course, you'll have the chance to walk in Shakespeare's footsteps with a visit to nearby Stratford-upon-Avon). - Evelyn Wrench Speaker Program
Paul Edmondson, Head of Research and Knowledge, at Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in Stratford-upon-Avon, will visit the ESU West Coast Branches. Andrea Mays, economics professor and author, will speak in Kansas City and New Orleans about industrialist, Henry Folger, and his obsessive search for Shakespeare's First Folio. - International Tours
