Luard Morse Scholarships

"The English-Speaking Union Luard Morse Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce Kennedy Williams as the next Scholar. Kennedy, a sophomore biology major at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, represents the highest caliber of student-scholars our nation has to offer. The ESU is honored to support her educational efforts as she broadens her horizons with this study-abroad opportunity to the United Kingdom. Now more than ever, the need for global dialogue and relationships between people is critical to a peaceful future. The Scholarship Committee and the Luard Morse alumni community joins me in wishing Kennedy, and all the finalists and applicants, the very best,"  stated Darrell W. Hill, chair of the ESU Luard Morse Scholarship Committee. Kennedy Williams will receive $30,000 toward a semester of study at any university of her choosing in the United Kingdom during the 2024-2025 academic year.

Kennedy intends to continue her study of Biology in the United Kingdom in pursuit of her long-term career goal of becoming a forensic medical examiner. Given her strong academic and leadership track record, we are confident that Kennedy will excel during her semester abroad.

The Luard Morse Scholarship finalists included three other exceptional sophomore students: Khalil Winzer-Wilks, a History and International Affairs Major at Howard University; Journei Ferguson, a Computer Science Major at Spelman College; and Kawama Wilson, an Elementary Education Major at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.

The Luard Morse Scholarship Committee comprises dedicated program alumni, including Darrell Hill (1990); Monique Robinson Clark (1999); Sean Mickens (2007); Rami Blair (2018); Brandy Bien-Aime (1999); Demetriouse Russell (1987), as well as Christopher Medalis, PhD.

Since 1969, The English-Speaking Union has provided Luard Morse Scholarships to students attending historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to study in the United Kingdom. These merit awards, which are open to sophomores pursuing a four-year degree, provide up to $30,000 for a semester of study at any university in the United Kingdom. Students in all disciplines are eligible. The scholarship has been awarded to students majoring in economics, philosophy, finance, mathematics, liberal arts and the sciences.



Shang andrews ii SELECTED AS 2022-2023 LUARD MORSE SCHOLARSHIP WINNER

The English-Speaking Union of the United States is pleased to announce Mr. Shang Andrews II has been selected as the 2022 Luard Morse Scholarship recipient. Mr. Andrews of Potomac Falls, VA is a student at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, NC, where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. Under the Luard Morse Scholarship, Mr. Andrews has been awarded up to $25,000 to study for a semester in the British University of his choice.

A SEMESTER ABROAD IN ENGLAND

The Luard Morse Scholarship provides up to $25,000 towards a semester of study at a British university to deserving students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The scholarship is open to sophomore students in all disciplines and has been awarded to students majoring in economics, philosophy, finance, mathematics, liberal arts, and the sciences.

Since the inaugural 1969-70 academic year, 75 Luard Scholars have performed with distinction at 18 British universities, including University of Oxford, Cambridge University, University of Edinburgh, and the London School of Economics. They have served as ambassadors for the United States while abroad and for British higher education upon returning home.

The finalist cohort included three other exceptional students from across the United States: Calvin Bell III, sophomore student of Political Science and Philosophy in Pre-Law at Morehouse College, Renee Creppy sophomore student of Neuroscience and French at Xavier University, and Jordan Nabwe, sophomore student of Political Science at Howard University. 




George pratt selected as 2021-2022 Luard morse scholarship winner

The English-Speaking Union of the United States is pleased to announce Mr. George Pratt has been selected as this year's Luard Morse Scholarship recipient. George Pratt of Jacksonville, FL is a sophomore at Morehouse College pursuing a degree in Religion and History. This prestigious scholarship offers George up to $25,000 towards a semester of study at a British university during their junior year.

The finalist cohort included three other exceptional students from across the United States: Ayodele Théard-Lewis, sophomore student of Sociology, French, and Education at Xavier University of Louisiana, Lauren Tolbert, sophomore student of African and African American Studies, as well as History & Political Science at Claflin University, and Nya Weems, sophomore student of Biology and Chemistry at Claflin University.

McKenzie Clark wins $25,000 in Scholarships to Study in England as the 2020/2021 Luard Morse Scholar

Ms. McKenzie Clarke, an English major from Murfreesboro, TN, and a sophomore at Spelman College in Atlanta, GA, has been selected as the recipient of an English-Speaking Union Luard Morse Scholarship.  Karen Karpowich, Executive Director of the English-Speaking Union, announced the winner, noting that she will receive $25,000 toward a semester of study at any university of her choosing in the United Kingdom during the 2020-2021 academic year. McKenzie plans to study at Goldsmiths, University of London, Fall 2021.

The three other finalists for the English-Speaking Union Luard Morse Scholarship were Ms. Amariyah Ayee, a Biology major and Chemistry minor from Columbia, SC, a sophomore at Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC; Ms. Alexis Brooks, a Sociology major and Environmental Science minor from Birmingham, AL, a sophomore at Spelman College in Atlanta, GA; and Ms. Kayla Reado, an English and International Studies double major from Terrytown, LA, a sophomore at Spelman College in Atlanta, GA.

Kyana Washington

The English-Speaking Union is proud to announce that Kyana Washington, an English Major at Spelman College, Atlanta, Georgia, has been selected as the Luard Morse Scholarship recipient. The scholarship provides up to $25,000 toward one semester of study at any university in the United Kingdom during the 2018-2019 academic year.

Ms. Washington attended Mansfield College at Oxford University. During her semester abroad, she served as an unofficial ambassador for the United States and, upon her return to Spellman College, for the United Kingdom.
