Welcome to the ESU...

The English-Speaking Union of the United States is a membership organization whose mission is carried out locally by the efforts of Branch members.  As an ESU member, you are contributing both financially and personally to programs that enrich the lives of students and educators through a diverse range of local and national programs.  Additionally, members expand their own social network by being invited to cultural and social events, speakers and book author events, regional and national events as well as invitations to international travel opportunities.

The English-Speaking Union, Charleston Branch is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, charitable organization. Annual dues and donations are tax deductible as provided by law. Please remember the ESU, Charleston Branch and our John WInthrop Scholarship Fund in your charitable giving and your estate planning.

Objectives and Activities of The English-Speaking Union, Charleston Branch

• To advance the ideals of individual freedom, dignity, democracy and justice which have been conceived and nurtured within the structure of the English language.
• To expand the use and comprehension of English throughout the world in order to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of the cultural heritage of English-speakers.
• To further the aspirations of the ESU by initiating and supporting cultural, educational and informational programs within communities.

Meetings: Members and guests gather at each monthly meeting to socialize before attending the informative and entertaining lectures presented by distinguished individuals from around the globe.

Christmas Party: Celebrate the joy of the season with ESU branch members and friends.

Annual Oct./Nov. Lowcountry Shrimpboil: An informal affair with sumptuous food and libations in a most convivial atmosphere with an entertaining speaker.

April Garden Party: A traditional English garden party complete with Pimm's, strawberries and cream, and cucumber sandwiches. All are encouraged to wear their best hats as we celebrate the beauty of Spring. 

Scholarships: The Charleston Branch offers annual scholarships: one to public or private school students, undergraduates, graduates or teachers.

National Patron Membership provides higher level support to programs that enrich the lives of our members, teachers, and thousands of high school and college students nationwide.  National Patrons receive local and national recognition and invitations to exclusive events.  Up to one half of your contribution can be designated to support your branch.
