CHARLOTTE TEEN COMPETES IN 34th ANNUAL ENGLISH-SPEAKING UNION NATIONAL SHAKESPEARE COMPETITON IN NEW YORK CITY

With a performance of a sonnet and monologue from Shakespeare, Leo Merrick  from Charlotte, NC, a student of Tracey Petree at East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, placed as a semi-finalist in the 34th  annual English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition in New York City. The Competition took place on May 1, 2017 on the stage of the Mitzi Newhouse Theater at Lincoln Center with 54 semi-finalists from as many ESU Branch competitions nationwide. Leo previously won the ESU Charlotte Branch competition.

The winner of the 34th English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition, Ogechi Egonu, representing the San Francisco Branch, received a full scholarship to attend the American Shakespeare Center Theatre Camp in Staunton, VA, this summer.  Second place winner, Brandon Burk, from the Kentucky Branch, won a cash prize of $1,000 from The English-Speaking Union, while the third place winner, Trevon Wainwright, representing the Kansas City Branch of the ESU, received an award of $500 provided by The Shakespeare Society.

Wingate's Feb. 16, 2016 ESU Shakespeare Competition

Once again, it is time to celebrate Shakespeare's works by registering your middle and high school students in Wingate's Annual Shakespeare Competition, sponsored by the English-Speaking Union! Please register your students by Jan. 25. The competition will take place on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016. Please share the following webpage and information with your students and fellow teachers:

Wingate's Annual ESU Shakespeare Competition: March 4, 2015

April 14, 2015- ESU Wrench Speaker and annual meeting at the Myers Park Country Club

April 14, 2015- ESU Wrench Speaker and annual meeting at the Myers Park Country Club. Coming from Great Britain is Sir Robert Rogers, KCB, Clerk of the British House of Commons for forty years. His subject will be "The Legacy of the Magna Carta- A Universal Charter?" Sir Robert was educated at Oxford and was a Rhodes scholar among his many distinctions. His wife Jane, a member of the Anglican clergy, accompanies him. Details to follow.

November 3, 2014- Bechtler Museum of Modern Art

November 3, 2014- "British Invasion" at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art. To carpool meet in the parking lot of the Mint Museum/ Randolph Road at 11:00 am. Look for the British flag. Lunch on your own in the atrium at the Bechtler before having a guided tour of the exhibition at 12:30. The Bechtler is one of Charlotte's great jewels. Admission complementary.

November 25, 2014- Saint Andrew's Day Gala at the Charlotte Country Club

November 25, 2014- Saint Andrew's Day Gala at the Charlotte Country Club. The ESU/ Charlotte branch joins with the Saint Andrews Society for cocktails, a seated dinner, and outstanding Celtic entertainment. Expect bagpipes, haggis, and fun! Formal attire and kilts suggested. A formal invitation to follow. $85 per person.

May 13-14, 2015- ESU Regional conference hosted by the ESU/Sandhills/Pinehurst branch offers an outstanding educational opportunity for branch officers in a delightful setting- springtime in one of North Carolina's most beautiful places. Charlotte delegation forming soon.
