Career Advisor

Overview:

We are currently seeking a part-time Career Advisor to support new immigrants in the greater New York City area. The Career Advisor will provide individual career counseling and coaching to adult literacy students. All participants in the program have a demonstrated financial need and intermediate English proficiency.  

The Career Advisor will work directly with clients from the Andrew Romay New Immigrant Center (ARNIC). This is a free program that empowers recent immigrants by providing them with the skills, knowledge and resources they need to build successful lives in the U.S. The program includes ESL classes, weekly conversation practice as well as opportunities for professional development and community integration. The aim of the center is to promote the full integration of new immigrants into U.S. society.

ARNIC is a program of the English-Speaking Union (ESU), a nonprofit, founded in 1920, that offers educational and cultural opportunities to immigrants, high school and middle school students and educators. Read more about our work at esu-arnic.org.

Position: Part-time Career Advisor (14 – 16 hours per week)  

Salary Range: $40 – 50 per hour. This is a part-time contract position that is not eligible for benefits.

Work environment:

This is a hybrid position that will include both virtual and on-site activities at our New York City headquarters.

Start Date and End Date:  

This position will begin in April 2023 and will end in December 2023.

Reports To: Director, Immigrant Programs

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct initial  assessment of clients (prior work experience, transferrable skills, individual development needs
  • Provide one-on-one coaching and support to immigrant job seekers
  • Maintain individual student case files
  • Track and document student progress at each point of contact, including program participation, referrals to external services, interviews and employer feedback
  • Assist in preparing resumes and cover letters and provide feedback, as needed
  • Refer students to external support services as needed   
  • Facilitate development of soft skills such as problem-solving, decision-making, time management, etc.
  • Collect and analyze statistics to monitor program effectiveness
  • Organize special events with partner organizations (networking nights, career days, etc.)
  • Coordinate work site visits to key employers in different sectors
  • Research and keep up-to-date on developments in the U.S. labor market.
  • Assist students in registering for the Department of Labor JobZone website
  • Assist students in conducting other job search and placement activities 
  • Undertake additional tasks identified by program staff  
  • Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant professional experience in career counseling, workforce development, adult education or similar fields
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills with a proven ability to effectively manage time, meet deadlines and juggle shifting priorities
  • Demonstrated experience with event planning
  • Detail-oriented
  • Knowledge of and experience with outcomes measurement and program evaluation 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint), Constant Contact
  • Proficiency using Zoom, Google Meet and other online platforms
  • A track record of success working with immigrants or other underserved communities
  • Previous experience working in a nonprofit organization preferred
  • Team player with a collaborative work style
  • Cultural humility and a commitment to DEI
  • Knowledge of and experience using CRMs
