ESUUS Annual Conference
October 17-19, 2014
Newport, Rhode Island
In October 2014, about 140 ESU members from many branches met in Newport to experience this spectacular historic coastal city. Activities and private tours showcased Newport from the colonial period through the gilded age. The Conference, which was preceded by the Branch Presidents' Conclave, comprised ESU Regional Meetings, the ESU Annual General Meeting with substantive presentations on the ESU's national educational programs, the activities of Branches and constituency building and development. Mark Lawhorn met up with ESU Hawaii stalwart Paula Ho for various annual conference events, where they enjoyed meeting and sharing ideas with ESU members from elsewhere.
Of the many worthwhile ideas and innovations shared at the conference, one in particular stood out as particularly appealing for a remote outpost like the Hawaii Branch. In order to bring the Folger's approach to teaching Shakespeare to even more branches nationwide, the ESU has worked with the Folger to streamline the delivery of a one-day workshop that can happen anytime throughout the year (which will be easier for teachers to attend and branches to organize).
