ESU Group Evening Concert

Two theatrical and musical giants in Kansas City presented a remarkable and unique concert—free to the public on Saturday, November 23, 2013. The Heart of America Shakespeare Festival and The Bach Aria Soloists combined the evocative music of the great classic composers Bach, Vivaldi, Dowland and Handel with the poetry of the greatest playwright William Shakespeare.

Dr. Felicia Londré Presents Annual Lecture on Shakespeare Authorship Question

Kansas City ESU members attended a special lecture by Dr. Felicia Londré on November 4, 2013 at the University of Missouri at Kansas City campus.  Dr. Londré presented her annual lecture and slide presentation which surveys the evidence relating to the authorship of the plays and sonnets of the author known as William Shake-speare.  Some ESU members missed the recent ESU repeat screening of Last Will. & Testament.   This lecture was an opportunity to explore the topic in a lecture format.

ESU Group Dinner/Theatre Program

Kansas City ESU members and guests attended a Dinner/Theatre Group event on October 26, 2013.  Our ESU Board Member, Ben Martin, directed the play that, when first performed in 1988, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama—Love Letters, written by A.R. Gurney.  The story is based on written communications between two fictional characters who trace a lifetime together through the letters they exchanged over the years.  The story of their bittersweet relationship gradually unfolds from what is written—and what is left unsaid—in their letters.

ESU Screens Shakespeare Authorship Documentary for Members and Guests

The ESU Kansas City Branch held a repeat screening of the documentary film "Last Will. & Testament" on Sunday, September 8, 2013.  One year ago, the ESU co-hosted an advance screening of the film which explores the greatest literary mystery of all time: who wrote the works of William Shakespeare?  The documentary had very limited advance screenings before its U.S. premiere at the Austin Film Festival and Kansas City was selected as one of the cities for the screening.  It was co-hosted by UMKC Theatre with the generous support of Tom Mardikes, Chair of UMKC Theatre, and Dr. Felicia Londré, Curators' Professor of Theatre at UMKC.

Members of the ESU Kansas City Branch were invited to an "ESU Goes to the Movies" event to see the new contemporary film version of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing.  This modern-day treatment of the classic comedy has been acclaimed by the critics…

ESU Shakespeare Festival Group

The Heart of America Shakespeare Festival presented the delightful pastoral comedy in Kansas City, As You Like It at Southmoreland Park.  This story has everything we love about Shakespeare's comedies--mistaken identity, madness and mayhem.  And of course, LOVE. An enthusiastic group of ESU members and guests attended this delightful Shakespeare comedy on Monday, July 1, 2013.  It was perfect weather with the evening temperature at 75.

ESU KC Members and Guests Celebrate the Queen’s Birthday Tea and 60th Coronation

"I am sure that this, my Coronation, is not the symbol of a power and a splendor that are gone but a declaration of our hopes for the future, and for the years I may, by God's Grace and Mercy, be given to reign and serve you as your Queen". –H.M. Queen Elizabeth II, 2nd June 1953.

Kansas City ESU members and guests had a wonderful English Afternoon Tea in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's 87th birthday and 60th Coronation.  43 members and guests attended Anna Marie's Teas in Liberty on Saturday, June 15, 2013.  Jeff Schnabel, president of the ESU Kansas City Branch, commented, "This was the largest Queen's Birthday Tea for the Branch in over 15 years and we had over 20 guests who were not familiar with the ESU so we were delighted to tell them about our Branch."

Evelyn Wrench Lecture Series

The ESU Kansas City Branch and the Kansas City Public Library co-sponsored a fascinating lecture by distinguished author and historian Lady Julia Boyd (above) as part of the ESU's Evelyn Wrench Lecture Series on April 17, 2013.  This was the last stop for Lady Boyd after a 9-city lecture tour in the Midwest.  Approximately, 85-90 attended the lecture.  A wine reception preceded the lecture.  She answered questions from the audience after the lecture followed by a book signing of her new book, A Dance with the Dragon, The Vanished World of Peking's Foreign Colony.
