ESU Chairman, Dr. Paul Beresford-Hill Appointed CBE by Queen Elizabeth II

ESU Chairman Dr. Paul Beresford-Hill has been appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This honorary appointment is given in recognition of Dr. Beresford-Hill's work on behalf of British American Educational and Cultural Exchange and for his professional contributions, over many decades, to international education.

Dr. Paul became Chairman of the English-Speaking Union of the United States in September of 2015, as well as Vice Chairman of the global English-Speaking Union International Council. In April of that year he accepted the English-Speaking Union Founder's Award for his role in creating the ESU National Shakespeare Competition in 1983.

Dr. Paul came to the US in 1974 as a teacher of English before being appointed Headmaster of the Anglo American International School. In 1984 he created the Mountbatten Internship Program to provide opportunities for British graduates to experience American life and culture and to gain on the job training and, in 1990, he developed a reciprocal program in London for American trainees while continuing as Chairman of the organization, which became the Mountbatten Institute.

He left Anglo American in 1990 and returned to Oxford to pursue his graduate education. While at Oxford he was a Senior Member of Wadham College and was appointed a Research Associate at the Department of Educational Studies specializing in comparative education. Dr.Paul was appointed MBE in 1991 in recognition of his role in averting a major crisis in teacher recruitment in the new Boroughs of Inner London.

In 1993 he continued his doctoral studies at Columbia University where he also served as adjunct Professor and then became Director of Global Education at Dowling College in Long Island. From 1999 to 2005 he was Director of Bangkok Patana School, the British International School in Thailand, one of the largest international schools in Asia. He relocated to New York in 2005 and assumed the role of Director General of the Mountbatten Institute. Dr. Beresford-Hill and his wife, Kathryn, live in Westchester County, New York and have two sons.
