ESU Holiday Brunch with Featured Speaker: Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Laura Harrison

Join ESU members and Friends of ESU for our Annual Holiday Brunch on Sunday, January 17, 2016. This year our program features a special guest speaker, Dr. Laura Harrison. Westminster College, Fulton, Missouri, has selected Dr. Harrison as the Fulbright Award Recipient for the 2015-2016 Fulbright-Robertson Visiting Professor of British History program. Dr. Harrison received her PhD degree from the University of Leeds, U.K. and will be lecturing in the U.S. and pursuing a writing project at Westminster College on one of the most prestigious and selective scholarship programs operating worldwide.

Dr. Harrison will present a fascinating historical look at some of the social customs popular with the young British working class circa 1880 to 1920 including the so called Coney Street "monkey run" in York.

Harrison's research explores how young working people met and socialized in different parts of the city, what these spaces meant to the young people, and how that meaning was conveyed, contested and controlled. It will be a unique step back in time when England's youth didn't have the benefits of smartphones, iPads and Xboxes.

Our Holiday Brunch program will also include a presentation from our First Place Winner of the 2015 ESU Shakespeare Competition, Olivia Sloan, describing her exciting trip to New York City where she performed on stage at Lincoln Center with 58 other ESU First Place Winners throughout the U.S.

Be sure to mark your calendar for this special occasion, held again at The Grand Street Café. This is a festive gathering where we feast on award-winning food and even celebrate with traditional British Crackers.

This Sunday Brunch has been acclaimed by food critics as one of the best in Kansas City.  It includes your choice of three entrees from a special Brunch menu, a selection of appetizers, salads, pastries/desserts and your choice of coffee, iced tea or soda (a cash bar for other beverages is optional).

This will be a Sunday treat you should not miss.  There will be surprises and prizes so be sure to make your reservation online or send in your check as soon as possible.  Of course, friends and spouses are welcome to join.

Our Holiday Brunch is a convenient time to hold our ESU Annual Meeting required in our Bylaws.   It will be brief and first on our agenda.  We would like to expand our Kansas City ESU Board of Directors by two or three.  If any current member would like to volunteer to serve on our Board or if you know of another member who might be interested, please let Jeff know.  We are grateful for the dedication and support of our volunteer Board members.  So, if you would like to play a role in supporting a great organization as a board member, don't hesitate to let us know!

See the official notice of our Annual Meeting.  Click here.

We hope to see you on January 17, 2016!  Please call Jeff Schnabel at (816) 442-7007 if you have any questions. The entire ESU Board wishes everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Please check our website frequently for exciting programs coming to KC in 2016. www.esusu.org/kansascity
