2016 Annual Churchill Dinner

A festive evening was enjoyed by all at the Annual ESU Churchill Dinner held at the Naples Yacht Club on March 15, 2016. The dinner was hosted by Mrs. Alice Childs. Guests were treated to the piano music of Bruce Petsche during cocktails. The evening was highlighted with the speech by Lord Lisvane celebrating eight centuries of Magna Carta and its influence across the world, especially among the English-speaking peoples.
The Churchill Dinner is the major fundraiser of the Naples Branch and supports its various educational programs. Special thanks are due to our Major Donor, Mrs. Ann L. Henegan. We also thank Gold Sponsor, Richard & Lynda Smarg; Silver Sponsor, Mrs. Alice G. Childs; and sponsors Dr. Dean Edmonds, Jr., Mrs. Monaise MacDonald, Mrs. Patricia Ratliff, Mr. Jame Spencer and Mrs. Vivian Treat.

The winner was Fort Myers High School senior, Jinji Martine, who received an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City in early May. She was one of 55 semi-finalists competing in the English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition at the Lincoln Center Theater.

Before enrolling at the University of Miami, Jinji plans to take a year off from her studies to volunteer teaching English to children In Mexico. Her ultimate goal is to earn a Master's Degree in English Literature and become an English teacher.

One of the distinguished Collier County teachers who recently received a Golden Apple Award was Naples High School teacher, McKenzie Morton, a Naples ESU Branch members and also recipient of the Branch's 2014 British University Summer Scholarship award. The golden Apple Awards are presented by the Champions for Learning to highlight achievements of a special few teachers, awarding each with a $5,000 grant to expand their best class ideas to help students with their careers, aspirations and ultimate goals.
