Scholarships Available to NYC DOE Teachers: Shakespeare Teacher Intensive (July 24 & 25, 2014)

Announcement – May 2014

The English-Speaking Union is again offering scholarships to educators for its Shakespeare Teacher Intensive in New York City this summer.  The Karen Jeff Scholarship, named for the ESU's late Director of Education, is a competitive award open to New York City Board of Education middle and high school teachers.   To apply, please complete the application and return by June 23, 2014 to:  Katharine Moran, Manager of Shakespeare Education Programs, at kmoran@esuus.org.

Debate topic: In the case of the United States government, transparency is more important than security. 

The ESU Middle School Debate Program was launched in 2010 with a Chairman's Grant from National Endowment for the Humanities.  It initiated our partnership with Claremont McKenna College's Middle School Public Debate Program (MSPDP), the premier program for debate for students ages 10 to 14, with more than ten years of experience in the field.

Local Student Graces Lincoln Center Stage for the 2014 ESU National Shakespeare Competition

News – May 2014

Regan Sims from New York City, a student of Casey McClellan at the Professional Perfoming Arts School in New York, placed as a semi-finalist in the 31st annual English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition. The Competition was held on May 5th at Lincoln Center Theater in New York City for 58 winners of ESU Branch competitions nationwide. Regan had previously won the ESU New York Branch regional competition.

On Monday evening, March 31, 2014, Adrian Tinniswood OBE, a distinguished British  social historian, writer and lecturer, delivered the Evelyn Wrench lecture for the New York Branch. Before a capacity audience, including Branch members as well as representatives from the Metropolitan Chapter of the Victorian Society in America, the Royal Oak Foundation and the St. George's Society, Tinniswood discussed his new book, The Rainborowes: Pirates, Puritans and a Family's Quest for the Promised Land.
