New York City Teachers Receive Karen Jeff Scholarships

The English-Speaking Union awarded five teachers with scholarships to attend a two-day professional development program Shakespeare Set Free in New York City, July 18 and 19.  The Karen Jeff Scholarship, named for the ESU's late Director of Education, is a competitive award open to New York City Board of Education middle and high school teachers.

The scholarship recipients were:  Gillian Candelaria of Civic Leadership Academy (Queens); Maggie Geiger of Millennium High School (Manhattan); Michael Khairy of Brooklyn West Alternate Learning Center (Brooklyn); Marlene May of Fordham High School for the Arts (Bronx); and Jim Pratzon of Lyons Community School (Brooklyn).

The Shakespeare Set Free Institutes are a collaboration of the English-Speaking Union and the Folger Shakespeare Library, a national leader in Shakespeare education and home to the world's largest collection of Shakespeare materials.  During the interactive and intensive New York City Institute, teachers participated in lectures, seminars, performance classes and pedagogical exercises with internationally-renowned Shakespeare scholars and educators.  Teachers return to their schools energized and enriched with new methods for teaching Shakespeare.  Each participant also receives a Shakespeare Set Free Toolkit, with lesson plans, videos and textbooks for immediately applying the Institute lessons.

As described by Michael Khairy, "Shakespeare Set Free is an exciting way to immerse teachers and empower them with tangible techniques that are ready for classroom implementation."
