Teachers learn effective, interactive methods to teaching the Bard.

The English-Speaking Union's Branches in Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse are teaming up to bring professional development to Western New York's Shakespeare teachers.

Shakespeare Teacher Intensives, our partnership program with the world-renowned Folger Shakespeare Library, offer middle and high school English and drama teachers across the country performance-based professional development opportunities.

Through Shakespeare Teacher Intensives, educators:

  • learn text-based and performance-based approaches to teaching Shakespeare
  • master lesson plans and classroom activities from the Folger Shakespeare Library's Shakespeare Set Freebook series that meet Common Core State Standards
  • engage in close reading of Shakespeare's text by performing scenes from the selected play
  • participate in scholarly discussions with renowned Shakespeare scholars
  • increase self-confidence and familiarity with Shakespeare's works

Through two-day intensive and interactive workshops, teachers learn the Folger's easily-adapted methods and receive materials designed to engage their students in the Bard's works.  Over the years, more than 750 educators from 26 states were energized and enriched with new methods to set Shakespeare free in their classrooms.
