2021 Philadelphia Branch Shakespeare Competition Winners

CONGRATULATIONS!!

We are happy to announce the winners of this year's Shakespeare Competition. The following students will be awarded their scholarships at the Shakespeare Competition Virtual Reception on Sunday, March 7th starting at 5pm. Students must attend the reception in order to receive their checks. Students will be required to recite their winning monologue at the reception.
 
 
FIRST PLACE - $1,500 and a place at Nationals
SOFIA FOLGIA from Merion Mercy Academy

SECOND PLACE - $1,000
LUCY SHEA from Friends' Central School

THIRD PLACE - $500
QUILANA CASTRO CARDONA from Friends Select School

The Philadelphia branch Shakespeare Competition 2021

The 38th Annual ESU National Shakespeare Competition: Philadelphia Branch will take place online due to COVID.

JUST ANNOUNCED: The top 3 winners of The Philadelphia Branch Shakespeare Competition will receive:

            1ST PLACE:   $1,500 and a spot at the National Competition.

            2nd PLACE:   $1,000

            3RD PLACE:  $500

All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation and other gifts via USPS.

The deadline to submit the School Participation Form is February 15th. 

The deadline to submit the School Winner Form is February 22nd.

The winners of the competition will be judged solely on their submitted recorded performances.

Our Philadelphia Branch Finalists will be announced on March 1st.

There will be a Zoom reception on March 7th starting at 4pm that is mandatory for the top 3 winners to attend to receive their scholarship awards. They will be required to perform their winning monologue.

The Queen's Six were established in 2008, the 450th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth I, from whom they take their name.

Based at Windsor Castle, all the members of The Queen's Six are also Lay Clerks of St George's Chapel, whose homes lie within the Castle walls.

Winners of Philadelphia Branch 29th Annual Shakespeare Competition

Philadelphia Competition was held on February 15, 2016 at the Philadelphia Performing Arts: A String Theory Charter School. Seventeen schools from the Greater Philadelphia competed.  The winners represented a cross section of the area:  Left to right: Third Place: Thomas Van Dean, Central High School; First Place, Emma Muller, Perkiomen Valley High School; 2nd Place, Zillah Elcin, The Academy at Palumbo.

The Andrew F. Webster Scholarship was awarded at a reception for the winners and their families on Sunday, March 6, 2016. Left to right: Diana Evans, Shakespeare Competition Chairperson; Andrew F. Webster; winners Thomas Van Dean, Emma Muller, and Zillah Elcin.

Emma Muller will compete at the ESU National Competition in New York City.

Philadelphia Branch Winner at the 2015 English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition

3 winners of the 2015 ESU National Shakespeare Competition. (l to r: Third place winner Elizabeth Mears, winner Sarah Spalding and Second place winner Evelyn Johnson.)

With a performance of a sonnet and monologue from Shakespeare, Evelyn Johnson (Evie), a student of Tom McFarlane at Friends Central School in Wynnewood, PA, won second prize at the 32nd annual ESU National Shakespeare Competition. The Competition brought together 57 high school students, the winners of ESU Branch competitions nationwide, for a two-day event in New York City culminating in the final competition on April 27th at Lincoln Center. Evie had previously won the Philadelphia Branch regional competition.

For placing second, Evie won a full scholarship to the American Shakespeare Center's Theater Camp in Staunton, VA.
