Up Close and Personal with a Member of the British Parliament

In his lecture Mr. Bennett looks at the differences and similarities between the ways in which the US and
British political and governmental systems work, including recent innovations in Britain adopted from
US practice. Mr Bennett looks at the state of the 'Special Relationship' between the US and Britain in the
light of the Obama Administration's declaration of a 'Pacific Presidency', as well as the challenges facing
both countries in tackling government debt and in moving towards disengagement in Afghanistan. 

Nicholas Bennett is a former British Government Minister and Member of Parliament. He was Parliamentary Private Secretary in the final months of Margaret Thatcher's administration and a minister in John Major's first Government. Mr. Bennett was first elected to public office in 1974 at the age of 24 when he became a local councillor in London. In 2006 he went back to his roots and now serves as a councillor on the London Borough of Bromley and is the majority whip. He represents London on the Conservative Party's Local Government Board. He also sits as a Magistrate (Justice of the Peace) at a court in South West London. 

Educated at the Universities of London and Sussex, he taught for nine years in the 1970s and 80s. After leaving Parliament he became adviser on government affairs to the international consulting group Price Waterhouse and in 1998 was appointed Chief Executive of the Association of Consulting Engineers. In 2003 he established his own property development and consulting company. Mr Bennett travels regularly to the US and was a member of the All Party Anglo-American Group in the British Parliament. In 2012 he travelled around North Korea -
the world's most strange and reclusive state.
