The English-Speaking Union of the United States is a membership organization whose mission is carried out locally by the efforts of Branch members. As an ESU member, you are contributing both financially and personally to programs that enrich the lives of students and educators through a diverse range of local and national programs. Additionally, members expand their own social network by being invited to cultural and social events, speakers and book author events, regional and national events as well as invitations to international travel opportunities.
To support the local, national, and international programs and activities of the ESU and to cover administrative costs of our Branch, annual dues are paid by each member. There is a separate charge for meal costs at our annual business meeting and dinner. Membership dues are $70 for an individual and $110 for a couple or family.
In addition to annual dues, members are encouraged to contribute to the Annual Scholarship Appeal, which provides funds for sending teachers and college students abroad for summer study in the United Kingdom. All dues and contributions to the scholarship fund or other educational programs are tax-deductible.
When you join our Branch of the English-Speaking Union, you also become a member of the national organization, to which a percentage of the dues is remitted. We encourage you to take advantage of the benefits offered to its members, such as use of the National Headquarters building at 144 East 39th Street, New York, NY 10016 (telephone 212/818-1200); use of Dartmouth House, British ESU headquarters in London; and special rates for ESU members at the Chesterfield Hotel in London. If you become a National Patron (by a donation to the national ESU), you will be invited to a special weekend each year arranged by different branches in the U.S., and there are often special travel packages and educational opportunities offered to all members.

You can help the Richmond Branch execute our mission locally by donating to the Branch Scholarship Fund, the Bardathan Fund, or the General Donation Fund. The funds provide for educational and cultural opportunities for local teachers and students.
National Patron Membership provides higher level support to programs that enrich the lives of our members, teachers, and thousands of high school and college students nationwide. National Patrons receive local and national recognition and invitations to exclusive events. Up to one half of your contribution can be designated to support your branch.
