Ethel Kemp -Slaughter was honored at Emerald Downs

Longtime member Ethel Kemp-Slaughter was honored at the Opening of Emerald Downs Race Track with the third race being named "Ethel Kemp-Slaughter 95th Birthday Purse" and was recognized in the winner's circle. One of many special days celebrating this natal date. Hoorah to Ethel and  here's hoping you and James held the winning ticket.

 
 

Reception Report

We had a marvelous time in April at the home of Jennifer and Stan Beckelman. The evening was warm, the house overflowed with members and guests. There are simply none more welcoming than the Beckelmans. A very big Thank You to the bar managers Steve Dorn and Joe Harrington. Given the number of folks at this event, they worked non-stop! The buffet table was overflowing courtesy of Alison Ellison, Norma Jean Kritsonis, Ingeborg Dunlap, Margaret Read, Sarah Navarre, Marlene Holbrook, JennyBeckelman, Ann Dickerson, Delia and Joe Marloich. The food was simply superb!!

REGION VIII 2014 SPRING MEETING RECAP

Although attendance was low (10 people including the ESU Executive Director), delegates from Seattle, Portland, and Denver participated in a lively and informative meeting in Tucson AZ on March 29th Executive Director Chris Broadwell lauded Seattle once more for the outstanding national conference last September. He has visited a number of branches. Many of these branches have excellent programs that appear to be well kept secrets! National wants to get information about various programs from the branches so that they may be highlighted on the national website. Despite the closing of some branches (National is administering their Shakespeare programs), one branch actually got revived through the Shakespeare Competition. A student from Ogden UT participated in the Denver Competition, and the student's teacher is considering starting a branch in Ogden. So new branches can indeed get started from our activities.

Congratulations to Marina...

Marina Tarlinskaya's book, "Shakespeare and the Versification of English Drama, 1561—1642," has been accepted for publication by Ashgate Publishers. Publication will occur later this year.

The book contains an analysis of various numerically measurable properties of the verse of essentially all known poets of the period. From it one can obtain a "signature" of each poet, which is then useful in determining the authorship of anonymous works, or the identification of authors act-by-act for collaborative works.
