Rules and Requirements for Remote Participation

What are the rules to participate remotely?

  • You have been selected by your local ESU Branch to represent your community as a Branch Winner in the 2022 ESU National Shakespeare Competition.
  • You understand and agree that prizes may be substituted and/or postponed. You also understand and agree that no student under the age of 16 will be allowed to travel overseas.
  • You agree that you must be vaccinated against COVID 19 and any other vaccinations as required by the providing institution and any local mandates and that you will provide proof in order to attend prize camps or events.
  • You must be enrolled in the 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade or the equivalent for home school students.
  • You have not acted for pay on stage or screen during the 2021-2022 school year.
  • If you are selected as one of 10 finalists from your video submission, you are available to participate in the ESU National Shakespeare Competition finals live via video chat on Monday, April 25, 2022. (Date tentative. Details to come).
  • You agree to attend a dress rehearsal Zoom meeting if you are among the finalists.
  • If you are among the 10 finalists, you agree to attend a BADA Workshop on March 26th which is part of your prize package.
  • You agree that all decisions made by ESU staff regarding the competition are final and binding and will supersede any information in previous publications or mailings.

What are the rules for recording the video?

We at the ESU recognize that our students and teachers are currently facing unprecedented challenges. It is never our intention to create an undue burden, or a situation that disadvantages one child over another. For that reason, the requirements for recording and submitting performances are designed to use basic, readily available technology accessible to almost anyone.

  • You may not use professional recording, lighting, editing, or sound equipment. Cell phone video is acceptable.
  • You must be clearly audible and clearly visible. Our preference is to see performers from head to toe, however from the waist up is also acceptable.
  • No costumes, no sets and no props of any kind. Students should not use furniture or interact with objects in their performance space.
  • You are not allowed to use your hair or items of clothing (i.e. shoes, hair accessories, hats, gloves, etc.) as props. Ex. If the character rolls up a sleeve, you should mime rolling up your sleeve. A character combing her hair should be mimed and the actual hair left untouched.

In order to be fair to all students, we must continue to insist that videos NOT be recorded on any type of stage.

  • Students may not submit recordings taken on professional or school stages as this puts others at a disadvantage. This includes but is not limited to proscenium arch, thrust, black box, or in the round.
  • No camerawork (close ups, pans, fades), no effects (light or sound) and no mics.
  • No titles or credits of any kind.
  • You should introduce yourself by name (first and last) and the selections to be performed, in order. Do not mention your school or branch.
  • You may perform your selections in whatever order you prefer. All monologues and sonnets must be selected from the 2022 packets provided by the ESU. No exceptions.
  • The video should be of one continuous performance with no edits or cuts and should include the monologue and the sonnet in their entirety.
  • Judges notes will not be shared with participants.
  • Branch champions are encouraged to record a new video for this submission. Videos submitted to branch competitions are acceptable provided they meet all of these criteria.
  • Please upload your video to YouTube and make it unlisted. Provide the link on this form. Only those with access to the link should be able to view it.
  • Any deviation from the above may result in your disqualification. The decisions of ESU program staff and judges are final.

I (and my parent(s)/guardians if I am under 18) have read and agree to all of the above.
