ST. LOUIS TEEN COMPETES IN 34th ANNUAL ENGLISH-SPEAKING UNION NATIONAL SHAKESPEARE COMPETITON IN NEW YORK CITY

With a performance of a sonnet and monologue from Shakespeare, Julia Hotaling  from St. Louis, MO, a student of Anita Hagerman at John Burroughs School in St. Louis, placed as a semi-finalist in the 34^th annual English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition in New York City. The Competition took place on May 1, 2017 on the stage of the Mitzi Newhouse Theater at Lincoln Center with 54 semi-finalists from as many ESU Branch competitions nationwide. Julia previously won the ESU St. Louis Branch competition.

The winner of the 34^th English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition, Ogechi Egonu, representing the San Francisco Branch, received a full scholarship to attend the American Shakespeare Center Theatre Camp in Staunton, VA, this summer.  Second place winner, Brandon Burk, from the Kentucky Branch, won a cash prize of $1,000 from The English-Speaking Union, while the third place winner, Trevon Wainwright, representing the Kansas City Branch of the ESU, received an award of $500 provided by The Shakespeare Society.

Brian Abel Ragen is Emeritus Professor of English at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where he taught for two decades. He is a graduate of Pomona College in Claremont, California, and holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University. He was editor of the scholarly journal Papers on Language & Literature and is the author of books on Flannery O'Connor and Tom Wolfe, as well as articles on subjects that range from biblical allusions in Chaucer to the revision of traditional hymns in modern hymnals.

Julia Hotaling, St. Louis Shakespeare Competition winner, will perform a monologue by Margaret, from Henry VI part 3, and will recite Sonnet 130. Paula Heller, STL Branch Shakespeare Competition Coordinator, will introduce Julia. Light refreshments will follow at the Lily Pond Shelter.

Donna Northcott holds a BA in Theatre from St. Louis University and an MA in Theatre from Northwestern University. She studied Shakespearean acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), Summer Seminar at Oxford University, Meisner Technique at the Actors' Center in Chicago; interned in Artistic Administration at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago and has taught Meisner Technique and Shakespeare acting workshops in Chicago and St. Louis. Prior to coming to Lindenwood University, Ms. Northcott was employed as the Live Theatre Manager at the St. Louis Science Center, where she created the Science Theatre Caravan touring program, and later sh served as the Youth Theatre Manager at the Jewish Community Center. She currently serves as an Artistic Advisor for the St. Louis Science Center.

St. Louis Branch Shakespeare Competition

The English-Speaking Union of St. Louis hosted a wonderful Saturday morning of young people and Shakespeare on February 4, 2017  at  Fontbonne University! 

Thanks to Joan Falk and Deanna Jent, we were able to meet at Fontbonne University for the annual ESU Shakespeare competition.  Ten area schools sent competitors who inspired all in attendance at their grasp of the language and rhythm of the Bard.  In fact every year, the students seem to get stronger and stronger at performing Shakespeare.
