Taking Tea with Shakespeare & Friends

Twelve ESU members and guests attended the 10th Annual Taking Tea with Shakespeare & Friends on April 21, 2013.  This is the third year ESU has participated in the fundraiser for the Daughters of the British Empire.  It was sponsored by The Leawood Stage Company, The Barn Players and the Magna Carta and Royal Arms Chapters of the DBE.  A delightful afternoon tea was served and Barn Players Theatre actors performed scenes from Hamlet including a sword fight scene.  Arriving guests were greeted with live music, Highland dancing and displays of the sponsoring groups.  A silent auction, raffles and door prizes added to the ambience of the afternoon in honor of the Bard's birthday and also Queen Elizabeth II's actual birthday was on the day of this tea also.

Kansas City Ballet

On Sunday, March 24, 2013, ESU members and guests braved a third winter snow storm to attend a matinee performance of an original ballet work inspired by Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream—based on Shakespeare's timeless comedy about the romantic misadventures of two mortal couples and the king and queen of the fairies.

KC Branch Launches "Gift of Membership" for the Holidays

On November 18, 2013, the ESU Kansas City Branch launched a special holiday membership drive called "The Gift of Membership."  Kansas City ESU members can purchase an introductory holiday membership to the Kansas City Branch for their friends, relatives or students in high school or college who have an interest in ESU events and activities.  "For a modest introductory membership fee, ESU members can offer the perfect gift to their friends or relatives—a membership into the Kansas City Branch of the ESU which is good now until June 30, 2014," said Jeff Schnabel, president of the ESU Kansas City Branch.

KC Shakespeare Competition Winner, Wyatt McCall, Performs in NYC at Lincoln Center

Our annual Kansas City branch ESU Shakespeare Competition was held on Sunday, February 17, 2013, at the Plaza Library in Kansas City, MO.  An enthusiastic audience of nearly 200 watched fourteen high school students from the KC metro area compete in reciting Shakespeare monologues and sonnets.

Wyatt McCall, a junior at Olathe Northwest High School, won first place in the Kansas City competition. McCall impressed the judges and captivated the audience with his performance of King Richard III from the play Richard III and his recitation of Sonnet No. 61.

The 2012 KC Branch Shakespeare Competition

2012 marked the 28th year for the Kansas City Branch's Shakespeare Competition. This Competition is designed to develop students' speaking and critical thinking skills while they explore the beauty of the language and the timeless themes in Shakespeare's works. By preparing a monologue and sonnet for public presentation, students bring Shakespeare to life in their own way and learn to express his works with understanding, clarity and feeling.

NEWS FLASH! Cellular Cenes: An Original Play Written and Directed by ESU Member Ben Martin

StreetFound Entertainment and Downtown Lee's Summit, Missouri Main Street presented a unique new theatre experience on the streets of Downtown Lee's Summit called "Cellular Cenes," where the audience literally will follow the story of two young people and their quirky budding relationship. "Cellular Cenes" starred two local actors--Chloe Gibbs and Ben Johnston.

ESU Titanic Exhibit & Lunch

The ESU Kansas City Branch arranged a special Group Tour of Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition at Union Station in Kansas City on Saturday, August 18, 2012. Our Group package included admission to the Exhibit followed by a casual luncheon at Harvey's Café located at Union Station.  Nineteen ESU members and guests attended the Tour and Luncheon and had a delightful afternoon.

Queen’s Birthday and Diamond Jubilee Tea Celebration

Kansas City ESU members and guests had a wonderful English Afternoon Tea at Anna Marie's Teas in Liberty on Saturday afternoon, July 28, 2012.  The tea was held in a beautiful 3-story Victorian home built in 1913.  It was furnished in English and American turn-of-the-century antiques.  In total, 35 attended the tea which was the largest ESU Queen's Birthday Celebration in over two decades.
