Receptions Past and Present

We enjoyed quite a special monthly reception at the home of Dr. Martin Greene in Madison Park in June. Dr. Greene's library was the highlight of the evening. It houses a fine collection of travel and exploration titles related to Polar Exploration (Arctic and Antarctic), Russian-American and selected titles on exploration of the Pacific Northwest, Northwest Passage and Northeast Passages. SEATTLE BRANCH ESU SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS HONORED AT MAY AGM

The Seattle Branch's Annual General Meeting this May at the lovely Seattle Yacht Club included officially recognizing our three 2013—14 scholarship winners. Ramon Henderson, Alexander McCauley and Zachary Torp are nearly finished with their first year of graduate studies in the University of -Washington's Department of English, and they expressed their thanks and how they felt honored by being scholarship recipients. One scholar is looking into literature that explains how coffee has been "flavored" (as in, adulterated!) through the ages and how that has led to changes in food laws. "We also welcomed back Professor Juan Guerra, who has one more

RECEPTION COMMITTEE

Norma Jean Kritsonis and Alison Ellison have been appointed as your new Sub-Committee Chairpersons for the food buffet. A few changes have been made and need to be noted. There will be a sign up sheet at each reception for volunteers to bring food to future receptions. Those who volunteer will have their entrance fee waived. If you bring food and did not sign up for that month's reception, your contribution will be a wonderful donation but please keep in mind you will need to pay the entrance fee.

REGION VIII 2014 SPRING MEETING RECAP

Although attendance was low (10 people including the ESU Executive Director), delegates from Seattle, Portland, and Denver participated in a lively and informative meeting in Tucson AZ on March 29th Executive Director Chris Broadwell lauded Seattle once more for the outstanding national conference last September. He has visited a number of branches. Many of these branches have excellent programs that appear to be well kept secrets! National wants to get information about various programs from the branches so that they may be highlighted on the national website. Despite the closing of some branches (National is administering their Shakespeare programs), one branch actually got revived through the Shakespeare Competition. A student from Ogden UT participated in the Denver Competition, and the student's teacher is considering starting a branch in Ogden. So new branches can indeed get started from our activities.

March Reception News

The home of Phyllis Failor was the venue for the March reception—a lovely and comfortable place. A big thank you goes to Phyllis and also to Gay Saunders who organized the bountiful table for the reception.

The following are the people who helped Gay, providing the food: Josephine Hays, Mary Mohler, Ingrid Philbrick, Sarah Atwood, Eleanor Monroe, Allison Ellison, Norma Jean Kritsonis, Julie Albright and, of course, Gay Saunders.

It was a wonderful evening with great food, great drinks (thanks to Joe and Steve) and great attendance including three of the past scholarship winners (thank you, Loveday). A real success!
