2017 Walter Hines Page Scholar

The St. Louis Branch of the English-Speaking Union hosted Mr. Peter Hambridge as our 2017 Walter Hines Page Scholar.  Mr. Hambridge currently serves at the Head of Biology and the Joint Head of Science at Parmiter's School in Hertfordshire, United Kingdom.  The goal of his visit was to explore strategies that American high schools use to support and encourage students in their pursuit of post-secondary science studies and careers.  He was provided with an informative and tasty tour of St. Louis, spoke about today's technological world at the St. Louis Branch February luncheon, toured four local schools, met with a professor of Educational Leadership at Maryville University, and attended a Saint Louis University basketball game.

Reminder to Teachers

As you prepare your students for the upcoming Shakespeare Competition, please complete your application for the Teachers Learning Abroad grant offered by the St. Louis chapter of English Speaking Union.  This is the chance of a lifetime for powerful, in-residence professional development in the United Kingdom.  Choose from studying for three weeks at Oxford University, Shakespeare's Globe in London, or Edinburgh University.  The St. Louis ESU Chapter will cover the costs up to $5,000 for this incredible experience.  Having been a Teacher Learning Abroad in 2013, I can tell you that it is just magical to be able to sit where C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien met to peer edit their literary masterpieces or to buy sweets in the shop that was described by Lewis Carroll in Through the Looking Glass.  The knowledge I acquired as I studied writing at Exeter College was valuable to not only me but also for my students.
