Announcing: Luard-Morse Scholars for 2017-2018

NEWBERRY AND RAMSAY WIN $50,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS
TO STUDY IN ENGLAND AS 2017 LUARD MORSE SCHOLARS

New York City: Ms. Serena Newberry, an English Education and Pre-Law major from Southfield, MI, a student at Xavier University of Louisiana, New Orleans, LA, and Mr. Leondre Ramsay, a Political Science major and Community Development minor from Tallahassee, FL, a student at Howard University, Washington, DC, have each been selected as recipients of an English-Speaking Union Luard Morse Scholarship.  Christopher Broadwell, Executive Director of the English-Speaking Union, announced the winners, noting that each scholar will receive $25,000 toward a semester of study at any university their choosing in the United Kingdom during the 2017-2018 academic year.

"The English-Speaking Union Luard Morse Scholarship Committee is excited about these truly exceptional students," stated Duane Hughes, the incoming chair of the Luard Morse Scholarship Committee.  "Serena and Leondre represent the highest caliber of student-scholars in our country. The committee is delighted to welcome them into The English-Speaking Union family and into the rank of Luard Morse Scholars. We wish all the applicants and finalists the very best in their future endeavors."

Serena looks forward to attending the University of London, and Leondre has his sights set on the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, or the London School of Economics.  Both will serve as unofficial ambassadors for the United States while abroad and for the United Kingdom upon returning home to their respective universities. The two other finalists for English-Speaking Union Luard Morse Scholarships were Ms. Allison Burns, a Political Science and Spanish double major from Howard University, and Ms. Mariah Flynn, a Biology major from Hampton University, Hampton, VA. The Luard Morse Scholarship committee comprises dedicated program alumni, including Laurence Morse, PhD (1972); Robert Farmer (1987); Duane Hughes (1985); Darrell Hill (1990); and Jill Toliver Richardson, PhD (1998)  as well as  Christopher Medalis, PhD, Director of Global Scholarship Programs at the Institute of International Education (IIE) and a member of the Board of the English-Speaking Union.

Since 1969, The English-Speaking Union has provided Luard Morse Scholarships to students attending United Negro College Fund schools as well as Howard and Hampton Universities to study in the United Kingdom. These merit awards, which are open to sophomores pursuing a four-year degree, provide $25,000 for a semester of study at any university in the United Kingdom. Students in all disciplines are eligible.
