English in Action helps newcomers to the United States gain fluency and confidence in conversational English by pairing them with volunteer tutors for weekly, one-to-one conversation sessions. 

As an English in Action Student, you will:

Who can register for English in Action?

Students must have a basic understanding of English and be able to read and write in English, in order to register for English in Action. Only adults may register.

How often does English in Action meet?

Students meet with their tutors once a week for two hours. The annual registration for the program can be renewed each year. It is good for up to one year of conversation practice, with a break during the summer.

When and where does English in Action meet?

English in Action is offered Monday through Saturday. Evening sessions are held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. All English in Action sessions meet at locations in Manhattan. Download the English in Action schedule here.

How much does it cost?

There is an annual registration fee of $350.00. Students may pay by cash, check, money-order or credit card.  Students cannot be matched with tutors until they have paid the registration fee. Some scholarships are available.

Do I need to buy any books for English in Action?

This program focuses on improving speaking and listening skills, and is tailored to meet the needs of individual students. It is not a formal class. Although there are no required textbooks, we do have a library with ESL texts available for use by students and volunteers. We also encourage students to bring any materials that may be of particular interest to them to English in Action for discussion.

How soon can I start English in Action?

After a student registers, we begin looking for a tutor immediately. There may be a short wait, but once a student is placed in English in Action, he or she is guaranteed a tutor.

When can I register?

New students can register for English in Action at any time of the year.

How do I register?

All students must attend orientation to register. Call the English in Action office at 212-818-1200 Ext. 245 or email kruelle@esuus.org to sign up. Orientation is held at the English-Speaking Union at 144 East 39th Street (between Lexington and Third Avenues).
