National Shakespeare Competition

March 9 - Shakespeare's Globe Education Workshop

Attend this exclusive workshop on performance-based education led by Emmeline Prior of Shakespeare's Globe and hosted by English in Action.

The workshop will include a private session with the Morgan Library's curators, who will share their collection of Shakespeare-related materials.

Get your students up and moving - all to better understand the Bard's words. This workshop is designed for middle and high school teachers to explore teaching Shakespeare through performance through the theme of father-daughter relationships. Emmeline Prior will lead teachers on using performance in the classroom to analyze Shakespeare's language using Merchant of Venice as a starting point. Participants will focus on:

  • Examining the relationship between fathers and daughters across a number Shakespeare's plays.
  • Exploring the wider context of attitudes towards women in Elizabethan society – linking to Woman as the outsider.
  • Reflecting on women in society today: how have gender roles and expectations changed?

The workshop will include time at the Morgan Library where you will see gems from J.P. Morgan's collection of rare Shakespeare-related materials, including texts printed shortly after the Bard's death. Please note that we will be walking five blocks from the ESU to the Morgan Library. Let us know if you would like assistance of any kind.

You will receive copies of all materials for use in your classroom. Appropriate for teachers of all levels. Breakfast will be provided. The event costs $125, but those who register before Feb. 22 will receive an early bird rate of $75. You will receive a certificate verifying that you have completed six hours of professional development.

The New York City finals of the National Shakespeare Competition are being held that afternoon at the same location. You are invited to join us for this exciting event. Participants who attend the competition will receive a certificate for an additional three hours of professional development.
