A Message from the Greensboro Branch President
Dear Members and Friends:
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Greensboro Branch of the English Speaking Union, I am pleased to welcome you to our website. We are a non-profit, non-political membership organization whose mission is to promote scholarship and the advancement of knowledge through the effective use of English in an expanding global community. We sponsor and organize educational and cultural programs for students and teachers as well as provide lectures, social events and travel opportunities for our members. Other benefits for branch members include membership privileges at ESU National Headquarters in New York City and at the ESU of the Commonwealth Headquarters in London. The Greensboro Branch is one of 68 located throughout the United States and is part of a global network of ESUs promoting educational opportunities in over 50 countries around the world.

GREENSBORO TEEN COMPETES IN 34th ANNUAL ENGLISH-SPEAKING UNION NATIONAL SHAKESPEARE COMPETITON IN NEW YORK CITY
News
With a performance of a sonnet and monologue from Shakespeare, Roxanne Cowett from Greensboro, NC, a student of Lindsey Clinton-Kraak at Weaver Academy in Greensboro, placed as a semi-finalist in the 34th annual English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition in New York City. The Competition took place on May 1, 2017 on the stage of the Mitzi Newhouse Theater at Lincoln Center with 54 semi-finalists from as many ESU Branch competitions nationwide. Roxanne previously won the ESU Greensboro Branch competition.
The winner of the 34th English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition, Ogechi Egonu, representing the San Francisco Branch, received a full scholarship to attend the American Shakespeare Center Theatre Camp in Staunton, VA, this summer. Second place winner, Brandon Burk, from the Kentucky Branch, won a cash prize of $1,000 from The English-Speaking Union, while the third place winner, Trevon Wainwright, representing the Kansas City Branch of the ESU, received an award of $500 provided by The Shakespeare Society.

Shakespeare Competition begins at 10:00 a.m.
In this program, high school students nationwide read, analyze, perform, and recite Shakespeare monologues and sonnets in as many as three qualifying stages: school, community (ESU Branch) and national levels. This national effort involves 15,000 students and over 1500 teachers who encourage their students to increase their self-confidence and develop critical skills as they come alive through Shakespeare's timeless works. Our winners get a chance to compete in New York City and then on to compete for the opportunity to study acting in England.
