Fine Arts Education Day Returns To Missouri State Capitol

The ESU Kansas City Branch will again be represented at the Fine Arts Education Day at the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City, Missouri, on Wednesday, March 29, 2017.
The purpose of Fine Arts Education Day is to highlight the importance of fine arts education in Missouri schools. This program is sponsored by the Missouri Alliance for Arts Education which is a consortium of arts education associations that represent dance, theatre, music and visual art. By joining together, these organizations in Missouri speak with a powerful and unified voice about the importance of the arts in Missouri schools.

Paseo Academy Senior Wins First Place in 2017 Kansas City Regional Shakespeare Competition Next: New York City!

Trevon Wainwright, a senior at Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts won First Place in the Regional Finals of the English-Speaking Union's, Shakespeare Competition in Kansas City, Mo. His sponsoring teacher was David Luby, Paseo Theatre Teacher. This was the 33rd anniversary of the Shakespeare Competition for the ESU Kansas City Branch.
Approximately 150 students participated in preliminary competitions in Kansas City area high schools as well as a competition for homeschool students sponsored by the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival. The ESU Kansas City Branch Competition was held on February 19, 2017, at the Kansas City Public Library, Plaza Branch, Kansas City, MO.
Fifteen school winners from the Kansas City area schools participated. Trevon impressed the judges and captivated the audience with his performance of King Henry from Henry V and his recitation of Sonnet 130. He will go on to represent ESU's Kansas Branch as a semi-finalist at the National Shakespeare Competition held at Lincoln Center in New York City on May 1, 2017.

Grace Goheen, First Place Winner of ESU Kansas City’s 2016 Shakespeare Competition, Shines in 2017 in Stanford Shakespeare Company

Grace Goheen won first-place in ESU's 2016 Shakespeare Competition, Kansas City Branch. Grace was a senior at Blue Valley High School in 2016. After graduation, she was accepted at Stanford University in California and is in her second semester of her freshman year. Because of her love of theatre and Shakespeare, Grace joined the Stanford Shakespeare Company, a student-run repertory theatre company renowned for creating entertaining and innovative Shakespeare productions.

The Board and staff of the English-Speaking Union, with sorrow and sincere gratitude, remember the life and work of our beloved benefactor Dr. Andrew Romay, who passed away early this morning, February 10, 2017.
Andrew Romay's favorite project was the program that is named for him, the English-Speaking Union Andrew Romay New Immigrant Center (ARNIC), and he wanted it to be his legacy for many years to come. Please support ARNIC today to honor Andrew Romay's memory and his wishes, donate here.

For nearly a century, the English-Speaking Union has employed English as a catalyst to foster global understanding and good will through educational opportunities and cultural exchange programs.
In today's shrinking world dominated by dollars and digits, unprecedented migration and bloody national borders, the ESU remains committed to improving the lives of new immigrants to the United States.
Since 2013, nearly 1,000 recent immigrants, refugees, and asylum-seekers from 66 different countries have been welcomed as members of the English-Speaking Union Andrew Romay New Immigrant Center. The Center provides a welcoming environment, resources and information to help immigrants improve their English to explore work and study opportunities, network, pursue citizenship, and acquire cultural fluency in order to participate fully in American society.

Sixteen Kansas City Area High School Students to Compete in 33rd Annual Shakespeare Competition

The Kansas City Branch of the English-Speaking Union announces its 33rd annual Shakespeare Competition for all Kansas City metro area high schools, grades 9-12. The Branch Semi-Finals will be held at the Plaza Library, 4801 Main St., Kansas City, Mo., on Sunday, February 19, 2017.
The Competition provides teachers with a performance-based program for the study of English Language Arts and Shakespeare. High school students recite Shakespeare's monologues and sonnets and compete for the chance to win a trip to New York City to compete in the ESU National Finals at Lincoln Center.
Through the Competition, students develop communication skills and an appreciation of the power of language and literature. The Competition has engaged more than 300,000 young people since its inception in 1983.

Our Annual Holiday Brunch is just around the corner. Join ESU members and Friends of ESU for this special occasion on Sunday, January 22, 2017 at 12 noon. This year's lecture program features a special guest speaker, Dr. Jonathan Chandler, Fulbright-Robertson Visiting Professor of British History who is teaching British history this school term at Westminster College in Fulton, MO.
Born in Kent, England, Dr. Chandler toyed with becoming, in his words, "a penniless jazz musician" before beginning a close affiliation with University College London (UCL) where he completed his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. in history. Dr. Chandler's extensive research and study in colonial and revolutionary North America is certain to bring a fascinating lecture program to our annual ESU Holiday Brunch.

Next Kansas City Tea & Literature Club Quarterly Meeting: January 9, 2017

The next meeting of the Kansas City Tea & Literature Club will be held on Monday, January 9, 2017. The book is The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith. Teas will be rooibos and honeybush tisanes along with some orthodox Kenyan black tea served both hot and cold. This Book Club program will include a special African-inspired dinner. Dishes will be a mix of meat and meatless. Please send an email to Nicole Burriss at midwestteafest@gmail.com to confirm your attendance by January 5 to allow planning for dinner.
