Raffle Tickets

Jay and Suzy Wakefield have kindly offered 2 nights at their Westport condo for our raffle item. Look for one of our ESU volunteers selling the tickets at our receptions and at the Annual General Meeting. Five dollars a ticket! The proceeds go to our scholarship fund. Do a good deed and perhaps you can spend a weekend beachcombing or trying out one of the great seafood restaurants. Or if you feel lucky, check out the Shoalwater Casino in nearby North Cove. Help Underwrite Our Scholarship Winners for the May 15th Annual General Meeting Dinner

Laura de Vos, Safiya Karmy-Jones and SuMiyat Thu are first-year graduate students in the University of Washington's Department of English. They are studying everything from colonial literature to literature of "multiple Englishes." They will be officially honored at the Annual General Meeting on May 15th at the Seattle Yacht Club. Won't you please help underwrite the cost of their dinners?
Branch President, Sarah Atwood, has taken the first step by underwriting the dinner cost for University of Washington Professor, Jeffrey Knight, who was involved in the efforts of the Seattle Public Library consortium (including our Seattle branch) to get an exhibit of Shakespeare's First Folio here in 2016.

Shakespeare Competition News

The Shakespeare Committee held our annual competition on March 1st at the Frye Art Museum. We had a wonderful selection of schools participating- ranging from 0lympia High School in the south (participating for the first time) to Oak Harbor High School in the north.

We had 17 students participate, reciting a Monologue and a Sonnet. They were all very enthusiastic about participating.

Dr. Marina Tarlinskaya's work recognized as a "Book of the Year!"
The following appeared under "Books of the Year" in the November 28, 2014, issue of the Times Literary

Supplement:

"[One of] two important scholarly works that will be read for years to come [is] Marina Tarlinskaya, Shakespeare and the Versification of English Drama, 1561—1642 (Ashgate), which uses quantitative prosody to trace the evolution of verse from Gorboduc to the closing of the theatres." Dr. Tarlinskaya uses rigorous quantitative analysis to engage in the systematic study of metrical structure, also known as prosody. Congratulations to Marina on her stellar achievement!
