We invite local middle and high school educators across the country to celebrate Shakespeare's 450th birthday this year by participating in the 2014 Shakespeare Teacher Intensives:  Romeo and Juliet.  This partnership program with the world-renowned Folger Shakespeare Library allows teachers to learn the Folger's easily-adapted methods and receive materials designed to engage their students in the Bard's works.  Learn more about the program in New York City and register today.

Results of the 2014 Shakespeare Competition

News – March 4, 2014

2014 finalists and judges at the Morgan Library & Museum.

Regan Sims, a student of Casey McClellan at Professional Performing Arts School in Manhattan, won the 2014 English-Speaking Union New York Branch Shakespeare.  Jordan Mayo of the Urban Assembly School for the Performing Arts placed 2nd in the competition, and Chiara Mannarino of the Marymount School of New York placed 3rd.  Congratulations to all the students who participated this year, and many thanks to their teachers and schools!

Members and Educators Benefit from the ESU's Program Partnerships

The ESU's program partnerships with Shakespeare's Globe in London and the Folger Shakespeare Library provided ESU NY members and educators with unique, personal, on-stage experiences during the recent highly acclaimed production of Twelfth Night on Broadway.  The Globe hosts ESU British University Summer School participants each year in a teacher-training course designed exclusively for ESU scholarship grantees.  And the ESU and Folger Shakespeare Library co-produce the Shakespeare Set Free institutes for high school teachers across the country.

ESU National Shakespeare Competition Winner on Broadway

We in New York City have been blessed to have on Broadway this season two extraordinary Shakespeare's Globe productions, Twelfe Night, or What You Will and The Tragedie of King Richard the Third.  I was invited by our friend Neil Constable, CEO at Shakespeare's Globe in London, to attend the opening night, and I had the opportunity to see both productions back to back and really savor repertory theatre -- and to attend the party to wait for the reviews (raves as you'll see from the attached link) with the star-studded cast.

An Evening with New Yorker Writer Adam Gopnik on the 50th Anniversary of JFK's Assassination

ESU members joined with those from the Shakespeare Guild and National Arts Club for a memorable evening of stimulating conversation with New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik on November 22.  The topic of the conversation was primarily retrospection on the assassination of JFK, which occurred on that day 50 years prior, interwoven with comparisons to Lincoln's and other assassinations, and the influence of Shakespeare and his themes on both men.

ESU President and Executive Director Alice Boyne welcomes the debaters

Celebrating the second year of the New York Debate League, sponsored by the ESU, two teams of middle school students debated the proposition: "We should welcome the end of the printed book" on June 15 at the Morgan Library & Museum.  The teams comprised three students from Hunter High College Community Schools in New York City and three students from the Hackley School in Tarrytown.

Xavier (a resident of Queens) is a student of Gabriel Silva at the Urban Assembly School for the Performing Arts (a pubic high school in the West Harlem 
neighborhood of Manhattan).

English in Action Celebrates World Book Night 2013

News – April 23, 2013

Barbara Sutherland, EiA Unit Director, presents a book to one of her students

Students from France, Spain, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Russia and Brazil celebrated World Book Night in New York City during their Tuesday, April 23rd session of English in Action. Their conversation partners presented them with copies of The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros.
They were urged to read the books and then pass them along to someone else. The House on Mango Street was selected because of its focus on the immigrant experience in the US.
