Debate topic: In the case of the United States government, transparency is more important than security.

The ESU Middle School Debate Program was launched in 2010 with a Chairman's Grant from National Endowment for the Humanities.  It initiated our partnership with Claremont McKenna College's Middle School Public Debate Program (MSPDP), the premier program for debate for students ages 10 to 14, with more than ten years of experience in the field.

Many middle schools do not have academic extracurricular programs, according to research by Claremont McKenna  College. Yet, experts point out that middle school is often the last chance to reach students who have been classified as "at risk" effectively.  The ESU Middle School Debate Program is specifically tailored to develop vital academic skills for all adolescents in this age group — listening and thinking, speaking, research, and note-taking.  Debate is also a perfect fit for the Common Core Learning Standards with emphasis on comprehension and collaborations as well as presentation of knowledge and ideas.

Most importantly, this program builds oral literacy and multi-media research skills, fosters critical thinking and expanded perspectives, enhances public speaking ability, increases confidence, supports diverse learners and strengthens civic engagement and discourse, preparing students for success in high school and beyond.

We serve a blend of public, charter and independent schools in New York City boroughs and Westchester County.
