Evelyn Wrench Speaker Adrian Tinniswood  

On Monday evening, March 31, 2014, Adrian Tinniswood OBE, a distinguished British  social historian, writer and lecturer, delivered the Evelyn Wrench lecture for the New York Branch. Before a capacity audience, including Branch members as well as representatives from the Metropolitan Chapter of the Victorian Society in America, the Royal Oak Foundation and the St. George's Society, Tinniswood discussed his new book, The Rainborowes: Pirates, Puritans and a Family's Quest for the Promised Land. This remarkable family, the Rainborowes, was at the center of the tumultuous decades between 1630 and 1660, when a scrappy string  of Massachusetts settlements quickly blossomed into a network of established colonies with their own distinctive social, economic and religious culture, while across the Atlantic England was brought to its knees by a bloody civil war that rent the fabric of English social, political and religious life. The family was actively involved in events on both sides of the Atlantic at that time, and Tinniswood, in his lecture, engagingly recounted the various roles that family played during this period. After his talk, Tinniswood autographed copies of his book that had been made available for sale and joined his audience for a post-lecture reception
