2015 British University Summer School Scholarships Awarded

Stephen Weber, Lorraine Prout and Grace "Sid" Ray

ESU New York awarded BUSS Scholarships for Summer 2015 to two talented New York City teachers. Stephen Weber, English Department Chair and teacher at Pace High School in Manhattan, hopes to use his full scholarship to attend Teaching Shakespeare Through Performance at Shakespeare's Globe in London.  The scholarship includes tuition, room and board, as well as roundtrip airfare. 

Lorraine Prout, from Archimedes Academy in the Bronx, received a partial scholarship towards tuition and looks forward to studying Creative Writing at the University of Edinburgh. 

Mr. Weber and Ms. Prout received their awards March 10 at the 2015 ESU New York Finals for the ESU National Shakespeare Competition at the Morgan Library and Museum.

Stephen teaches 12th Grade College Bridge English and Theatre Arts, 11th Grade Honors Writing/Greek Literature. His 12th grade co-English and Dramatic Arts Class teacher, Marc Lapointe shares: Stephen is a dynamic teacher who truly values continuous learning about his pedagogy and the content he teachers. He is integral to the success of our school's collaborative model of challenging and responsive instruction for our students . . . He is one of our truly great teachers and I am excited to continue to learn from him.

Lorraine teaches 7th and 10th Grade English, 10th and 11th Grade World Cinema Elective and 12th Grade College Prep Writing. For the past 4 years, Lorraine has taught 10th grade English at an inner city high school in the Bronx where most of the students' reading and writing levels are below the national average. She wants to develop more creative and innovative strategies for teaching literary analysis to struggling students. Her colleague, Tanya Mendola-Hammer shared: It is remarkable how Lorraine infuses her love of creative writing into the classroom. I have always admired how she uses various creative writing assignment to capture the interest of even the most indifferent students . . . I am eager to see what she will bring back from the program into her own writing as well as into her classroom.

ESU British University Summer School Scholarship  Since 1957, through the generosity and commitment to education of ESU Branches nationwide, more than 2,000 American high school and middle school teachers have continued their own education through summer study at prestigious centers of learning in the United Kingdom as ESU British University Summer School (BUSS) Scholars. BUSS teachers return revitalized and inspired to apply their new teaching strategies, knowledge and international perspective with thousands of students nationwide.
