Passing of Bea Manley

News

Bea Manley, former resident of Magnolia, has passed away at the nursing facility where she was living in Pennsylvania. She and her husband Ross, who predeceased her, were active in several local British organizations and the Church of the Ascension as well as the ESU. She will be fondly remembered by those who knew her.

Scholarship Committee Report

News

As many of us know, Seattle Branch ESU offers $1500 recruitment scholarships to entering graduate students in the UW's English Department. For Fall 2015, ESU is granting two scholarships to entering students. What would normally be a third scholarship is being set aside for funding a UW professor or student for research and/or conference travel in conjunction with 2016 being celebrated as "The Year of Shakespeare", the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death.

Matthew J. Poland is interested in the intersection of the following areas: the history of books and reading, knowledge organization, and how material texts transmit literature and structure its interpretation. What did it mean for nineteenth-century readers to read and use books printed in the early modern period? Matthew's research encompasses consideration of material texts, reading and editorial practices, and the history of collecting and knowledge organization.

2015 ESU Annual Conference in New York City

Save the Date – October 10-12

You are invited to join fellow ESU members in metropolitan New York City for a Columbus Day weekend filled with camaraderie and activities to highlight George Washington's time in the city. The conference will be comprised of the ESU Regional Meetings, the ESU Annual General Meeting with substantive presentations on the ESU's national educational programs, the activities of the branches and models for a vibrant and energetic ESU in the future. More later in future newsletters.

Passing of George W. Williams

George and Inez Williams

George W. (Wesley) Williams passed away peacefully in his home in Seattle, Washington on April 17, 2015. George was born February 21, 1924 in Portland, OR to parents George William Williams and Pauline Baldwin, and half-siblings Elaine Thomas and Harold Williams. He grew up the greater Northwest area and served in the Navy during World War II, stationed in Maui. There in his free time he discovered his passion for painting, which he pursued further after relocating to New York in the 1960's. There he took up acting as well, and obtained roles in several major movie pictures, soap operas, and off-Broadway stage productions. He met and married his true love Inez Gertrude Williams in May 1975, and they lived happily together until her death on December 14, 2012. George will be dearly missed for his great creativity, his mischievous smile, his sparkling eyes, and the way he could captivate any audience privileged to be held in his sway. George is survived by his nephews Steve and Mike Smith in Portland, OR, and by many, many friends. While there is no service George Williams will be toasted at the May, 2015 ESU board meeting, and board members may view a display with photos of Mr. and Mrs. Williams.

Raffle Tickets

Jay and Suzy Wakefield have kindly offered 2 nights at their Westport condo for our raffle item. Look for one of our ESU volunteers selling the tickets at our receptions and at the Annual General Meeting. Five dollars a ticket! The proceeds go to our scholarship fund. Do a good deed and perhaps you can spend a weekend beachcombing or trying out one of the great seafood restaurants. Or if you feel lucky, check out the Shoalwater Casino in nearby North Cove. Shakespeare Competition News

Event Recap

The Shakespeare Committee held our annual competition on March 1st at the Frye Art Museum. We had a wonderful selection of schools participating- ranging from 0lympia High School in the south (participating for the first time) to Oak Harbor High School in the north.

We had 17 students participate, reciting a Monologue and a Sonnet. They were all very enthusiastic about participating.

Help Underwrite Our Scholarship Winners for the May 15th Annual General Meeting Dinner

Laura de Vos, Safiya Karmy-Jones and SuMiyat Thu are first-year graduate students in the University of Washington's Department of English. They are studying everything from colonial literature to literature of "multiple Englishes." They will be officially honored at the Annual General Meeting on May 15th at the Seattle Yacht Club. Won't you please help underwrite the cost of their dinners?
Branch President, Sarah Atwood, has taken the first step by underwriting the dinner cost for University of Washington Professor, Jeffrey Knight, who was involved in the efforts of the Seattle Public Library consortium (including our Seattle branch) to get an exhibit of Shakespeare's First Folio here in 2016.

Region VIII Conference in Portland, OR

The 2015 Region VIII Conference will be held Friday, May 1, through Sunday, May 3, at the Hotel Benson in Portland, Oregon. The conference committee has been able to negotiate a special rate of $179 per night at the host hotel, so please make your reservations early! We want to encourage as many members as possible from all the branches in Region VIII to attend. Further details on the conference itinerary will be published as soon as they are available. The typical conference schedule begins with a reception Friday evening, an informative business meeting on Saturday morning, and a lunch and/or dinner with speaker. Sunday brunch concludes the business meeting. There is free time for sightseeing and shopping (no sales tax in Oregon!).
