In September of 2015, fourteen National ESU Patrons gathered around a roaring fire at the home of Sir Ludovic Shaw-Stewart and the former Lady Shaw-Stewart (Cindy Chetwode) for an introduction to the next wonderful eight days touring Scottish countryside and stately homes. In attendance were Quinn Peeper and Michael Harold from New Orleans, Robert Brody and Mary Ann Conn-Brody from Shaker Heights, Ohio, Susan Scott Ferris of Portland, Oregon, Morris and Diana Everett of Cleveland, Ohio, Janet Sutter of San Diego, CA, Fred Kleinschmidt and Loveday Conquest of Seattle, Washington, and Bill and Minnie Caruth of Dallas, Texas.
Ardgowan, the land of which was granted over 600 years ago, was home base for the first five days until the group moved to Edinburgh. The grand 18th century William Adam home provided the quintessential Edwardian country house experience. The group gathered each morning for a full Scottish breakfast before visiting stunning country homes. ESU patrons were received daily and feted by owners of the homes including teas and luncheons. Every night the group gathered again for cocktails in the library before supper in the grand dining room surrounded by magnificent 18th and 19th century ancestral portraits.
Highlights included a private library containing ancient and historical documents where our hostess specifically pulled original maps and books from colonial America, outdoor picnics, churches, and museums. Many homes contained private collections ranging from Renaissance paintings to Grand Tour decorative arts. The American guests were fortunate to have Cindy Chetwode with them the entire tour whose knowledge of 18th century country houses proved invaluable insight into Scottish history.
