Judging Resources

Help middle school students and be a judge!  Judges are a crucial part of the ESU Middle School Public Debate Program experience.  When you judge a debate, you make it possible for six middle school students to show how much they have learned and practiced.  Parents, teachers, administrators, school board members, community folks, and ESU members are all invited to join the ESU MSPDP Leagues as judges.

Judge Training

The MSPDP is unique in requiring all judges to be trained and certified.  Training is easy and offered at nearly every tournament.  Simply let your school debate teacher know that you're interested and we'll see you at the next tournament!

Judging Requirements

Every school that participates is required to bring one judge for every two teams at a tournament.  If a school brings an odd number of teams, they must provide one additional judge.  For example, two teams require one judge, but three teams require two judges.  When a coach brings more than enough judges, they help all judges enjoy the tournament even more.

If finding judges would create a significant barrier to your school joining the league (e.g., your debaters's parents have limited working English proficiency), we're happy to help find a solution to make sure your students can participate.  Please email debate@esuus.org and we'll start the conversation.
